As a small child, I wold wander through the fields around my house to gather various wildflowers to bring home to my mother. The prize was always to come across a bush of wild roses. Reaching in to pluck a bunch of those was a tricky thing as their thorns were not like the cultivated roses, one every so many inches, but very close together and very fine. Very prickly to even children's fingers! Even worse, the farther down you went, the harder and thicker the thorns became.
