Here where I live, nestled among the bluffs along the Mississippi River, we don't have conventional beaches. Instead we swim in the river from various islands/sandbars. Some are natural, some man made by the Corps of Engineers. Most cities have community swimming pools, but for actual fun in the sand, it's the river we turn to just as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn did.
