Pagan..Christian...It's a sign of love and remembrance.

Wild Thing replied:

You are quite right Elizabeth dear ... Thank you! ;)))

I agree with you that belittling others for what they believe is not what Christ had intended as his teaching. His intent was to open the heart chakra, not close it,. Unfortunately there has been many misinterpretations of the scriptures. You were taught to do no harm, yes? Would we all listen to that and be able to follow that. .... And congrats on your feature!

Wild Thing replied:

Thanks Denise...yes, do no harm...it's funny how often the interpretations of the scriptures are completely wrong. Given the time they occurred in compared to now! Words then did not always mean what they do now! ;)

I think that those who choose to have a limiting experience are probably learning something from that they need to know. Once they get that, then they can move forward to something else. It is inevitable. I think everything serves a purpose, even if it is telling you that you don't want that! :-)

Wild Thing replied:

We can only hope Denise ... some days I despair when I see those who espouse the teaching of the man they follow who was nothing but love & light but practice such hatred towards others at times. It really frightens me. In my opinion, it doesn't matter what path we walk, as long as it takes us all to the same light. I find no comfort in belittling another person's faith nor was I taught to do so. There is no right way ... ;)))

It is interesting that what you were taught to do ...is what is necessary to grown and evolve beyond where you were before. It is also what a naturally curious person does out of a need to understand the unknown. The Universe, I believe, wants us to evolve. That's why we have so much contrast on this earthly plane....to aide in our expansion. Belief systems that teach that they have all the answers already are limiting us from expansion IMO.

Wild Thing replied:

And I think you are exactly right Denise ... when we stop being curious, we stop learning & growing. We become stunted and we do limit ourselves. I think you put that beautifully. The more we know, the greater our understanding of this life on this plane thereby preparing us for the life on the next plane. I feel bad for those who think they have all the answers already. I feel like they miss out on all the wonders our world has to offer.

Apparently there are many layers to this. You could say that pagan and Christian beliefs intersect or overlap.

Wild Thing replied:

Yes, that is why I was taught that the pagan life means a life of constant study and learning! Even today, things are being brought to light that were not known 30 years ago!

Christians adopted pagan symbols because it made sense. The forms were meaningful, understood by most people and able to connect with and carry the Christian message. In its most fundamental sense, a "cross" is an intersection, a place where the spiritual and the natural world intersect, the juncture between life and death and so on. For Christians a cross is identified with Christ because he is himself the intersection between God and humanity. When I spent some time in Romania, I was fascinated to see that they placed crosses, sometimes one, sometime two or three, sometimes a "grove" of them at road intersections. These were not memorials for deaths on the road. This was a way of seeing the cross in every intersection and seeing every intersection as a symbolic statement about the cosmos as Christians see it.

Wild Thing replied:

Absolutely. As I was telling Denise, they had no other choice & it was expedient for them to do so. And also, as I said, I only know what I was taught, that which has been handed down through the generations of family. Which much of does not appear on the internet. Much of what I see, I consider "new" interpretations and archaeologists/anthropologists will not commit to interpreting any of the ancient signs/symbols out of I don't know fear/reprisal/loss of funding? Who's to say for sure. And as you say, all across the world, the cultures mix their beliefs within the Christianity framework in such interesting ways. The Romanian culture of the crosses by the crossroads being one of them. It would be interesting to investigate that further back in history to see if there is a significance to this ritual that predates Christianity. I would hazard a guess that there is. What I know of crossroads and their pagan beliefs of them is not enough to say much about it, but I do know that there may be a significant reason to it predating Christianity and that it got absorbed along with other charming little rituals in that area.

I believe ancient Christians adopted pagan symbols that already existed...as their own. Sneaky thing to do,.. but they thought it necessary for political reasons...to draw more people into Christianity and maintain control over them. There is bound to be a mix of influences in this symbol. It is nice you can select out what is meaningful to you.

Wild Thing replied:

Yes Denise ... that is exactly what they did ... had to do to grow as a religion world wide. I am lucky. What this cross means to me has been passed down to me through my family for generations. So as to what is written on the internet is mostly new to me as well. I know what I was taught as a child. What I was also taught was that the path I walk was one of constant learning because only then can one truly be enlightened. But, that doesn't mean I will ever have all the answers. The influences were bound to happen, even meant to happen. In a hundred years, I wonder what they will be?

Artist's Description

A Celtic Cross headstone found in my beloved Woodlawn ...

A sacred symbol for the holy Trinity, or it is the sacred symbol of the Divine Goddess and the Wheel of Eternal life? The Celtic Cross ... such debate about it. Is it pagan in origin, or it is it Christian? In this cross, the Christian influence is definitely emphasized. as the cross is in the foreground and the circle is in the background. Given my studies regarding this religious symbol, this particular one would mean the circle is to represent the halo of Christ, the cross the obvious representation.

To me, a pagan, it will always be the wheel ... of the elements ... air, fire, water, earth and the points on the compass that coincide with them, east, south, west, north with the center being spirit/universe. There is much more to it than just that simplistic explanation, but as I've said before regarding this symbol, I'd be here forever. Though the comment section might be a lively discussion in and of itsel...
