Description
Whitetail Deer:
The whitetail deer, odocileus virginianus, is the perfect combination of natural beauty, graceful speed and miraculous adaptability. They are Wisconsin's official state wildlife animal and North America's most abundant big-game animal.
The deer's coat is a reddish-brown in the spring and summer and turns to a grey-brown throughout the fall and winter. The deer can be recognized by the characteristic white underside to its tail. It will raise its tail when it is alarmed to flag the other deer. A population of white-tailed deer in New York is entirely white (except for areas like their noses and toes)—not albino—in color. The former Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, New York, has the largest known concentration of white deer. Strong conservation efforts have allowed white deer to thrive within the confines of the depot. White-tailed deer's horizontally slit pupils allow for good night vision and color vision during the day.
Deer are associated with fertility in many Native American cultures. In some Mexican tribes, the first parents of the human race were originally deer. Deer are sacred animals to many tribes of Mexico and the southwestern United States; they often play a role in creation mythology, are believed to sacrifice themselves to feed the people, or are considered caretakers of the earth. Deer songs and deer dances are common throughout this region, with the deer frequently serving as a symbol of the people. In the Huichol tribe of central Mexico, deer are especially sacred and are associated with peyote and traditional spirituality.
